It's the most common question in 3D printing groups, and the short answer is that there is no price per gram or per hour that works for everything. What does exist is a way to work it out that never loses you money: add up all your real costs and then the profit you want on top.
That total is your cost. The selling price is that cost plus your profit and any sales tax. Suma3D does the whole sum as you type, and if you drop in a Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer, PrusaSlicer or Cura file it fills in the grams and time for you.
| Part | Material and time | Cost | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Small (keychain, tag) | 10 g · 45 min + 5 min of work | $2.08 | $2.08 | $3.90 |
| Medium (10 cm figure, stand) | 60 g · 4 h + 15 min of work | $5.84 | $5.84 | $9.90 |
| Large (vase, helmet, technical part) | 250 g · 14 h + 30 min of work | $14.80 | $14.80 | $24.90 |
Worked out with the Suma3D calculator itself: Bambu Lab A1 printer (~$407, 95 W on average, 4500 h service life), PLA at $22/kg, power at $0.165/kWh, your time at $13.20/h, 8% waste for failed prints, $0.66 packaging, 40% profit and no sales tax, rounded to .90. These are guide prices for direct sales: change the inputs in the calculator to see yours.
Look at the small part: the filament costs a few cents, but the recommended price is several times higher. That's your time and the packaging, which cost the same however tiny the part is. That's why charging "so much per gram" loses money on small parts and stops being competitive on large ones.
There's no price per gram that works for everything. On small parts your time and packaging weigh more than the filament, and on large ones machine time does. It's better to add up the real costs of each part and add your profit.
It depends on your market and how much value you add (own design, personalisation, finishing). The calculator starts at 40% of the pre-tax price; change it and see straight away how much you earn per part.
